The Tiniest Walker
St. Louis HELP had the pleasure of serving this tiny girl. At almost age two, she is making great strides despite being diagnosed at birth with spina bifida and Beck-Fahrner Syndrome.
"She would not have anything to do with standard equipment," said her foster mom. "It was too big for her." Today the baby received a tiny walker, one that fit her, courtesy of a neighbor who had donated it to St. Louis HELP. Now, this child can learn to walk.
When she was born, doctors thought she would be bed ridden with serious mental development issues. Today, she is an inquisitive, alert, beautiful child, who carefully began to walk at once once she received the right sized equipment.
Jefferson County Service Is Changing — But STLHELP Is Staying
After many years of serving the community from our Crystal City location, that site will close on April 30. This decision follows a significant increase in facility costs — from $1,300 to $5,000 per month (a nearly 285% increase) — making it unsustainable to continue operating at that location.
While this is an important change, STLHELP remains committed to Jefferson County. We are creating new ways for residents to donate and receive free home medical equipment through local partnerships, community collection drives, and a new location with St. Luke’s United Church of Christ in Imperial. More details coming soon.
This transition is part of a broader effort to strengthen STLHELP’s ability to serve more people, more efficiently, across the region.
